Gang War in Milan (1973)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

I finally found an excellent Italian crime film in 1080p HD! This is a little slower paced for an Umberto Lenzi poliziotteschi, but very well made. It’s also a bit more serious than say, The Tough Ones. This was a total pleasure to watch as Raro Video’s restoration is fantastic. It features super saturated colors and deep shadows. Highly recommended.

Blu-ray available from Raro Video.

Killer Joe (2011)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

This is a very dark, but funny film based on a stage play (directed by William Friedkin no less). It’s so ugly and violent Matthew McConaughey almost threw the script in the trash. Almost. I’m glad he didn’t. Killer Joe is a unique movie that I definitely enjoyed.

Available on Blu-ray from Lion’s Gate.

The Baby of Macon (1993)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | no trailer available

This is about as arthouse as you can get. The Baby of Macon is up there among director Peter Greenaway’s better movies. The story is a critique of societal corruption that takes place during the Italian Renaissance. It’s set up like a stage play, the costumes and sets are very elaborate, and the cinematography is stunning. Sounds nice right? Maybe you could watch it with your mom to show her how sophisticated you are? Not at all. This movie has several extremely disturbing scenes that would send your mom through the roof. Some parts remind me a bit of Ken Russell’s The Devils. It also shares the same frantic energy and borderline overacting. If you can make it through the whole thing, you should get some kind of certificate. However I honestly think this is a fantastic movie. Oh and for you English comedy fans, look out for a young Jessica Hynes from Spaced.

Available on Blu-ray from Atlantic Films.

Haywire (2011)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

Women’s MMA badass Gina Carano plays a super soldier out for revenge. This one took me by surprise the first time I saw it. Non-stop action from Steven Soderbergh?!? Yes. It isn’t a realistic fight film, but damn it’s fun to watch.

Available on Blu-ray from Lion’s Gate.

Gangster No. 1 (2000)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

This is a solid English gangster riff on Goodfellas, but way more violent. Need I say more? Keep an eye out for Dr. Channard from Hellraiser 2. He even has a scene with Uncle Frank.

Not available on domestic Blu-ray.

Dead Ringers (1988)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

I can’t believe it took me over 80 posts to recommend a David Cronenberg film. After all he’s one of my favorite directors, and is STILL making good movies. Dead Ringers is an excellent, more mature thriller than say, Scanners. It does feel a bit slower than the director’s earlier films but that’s ok. It makes up for that flaw with one of my favorite minor movie character names of all time, Anders Wolleck. He’s played by an actor you might recognize. Also, keep an eye out for Jill Hennessy (City on a Hill, Law and Order, ugh… Crossing Jordan) and her real-life twin sister.

I also highly recommend you check out the recent Dead Ringers series on Amazon Prime. Very different, but great.

Blu-ray available from Shout Factory.

The Beach Bum (2019)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

I wish someone was showing an HD version of Julien Donkey-Boy, but this will do in the meantime. Harmony Korine sells enough paintings to never have to make a film again. That means he made this his way, and couldn’t care less what we think. I respect that. This movie is dumb, but I laughed a lot. Harmony was smart enough to hire a kick ass cinematographer, so while I was laughing I was marveling at the saturated colors and composition. Yep. I liked The Beach Bum.

Available on Blu-ray from Universal.

That Obscure Object of Desire (1977)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

Buñuel’s final directorial effort is a beautiful, infuriating, and confusing movie. The film is far more Art than entertainment, but it still manages to be funny at times too. It’s also one of my favorites among this director’s work.

Available on Blu-ray from Lion’s Gate.

The Pit and the Pendulum (1961)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

Roger Corman made several, very loose Poe adaptations starring Vincent Price. They are almost all good to excellent. I personally don’t care for The Raven or Tales of Terror, but check out all the others. This one is special because it was written by Richard Matheson (the novel I Am Legend is essential reading) and co-stars Barbara Steele. It’s very melodramatic, but has held up well for me after multiple viewings. To quote Don Nicholas Medina… “You are about to enter Hell, Bartolome, HELL!… The netherworld. The infernal region, The Abode of the Damned… The place of torment. Pandemonium. Abbadon. Tophet. Gehenna. Naraka. THE PIT!… And the pendulum.”

Available on import Blu-ray from Arrow.

The Rover (2014)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

This one seems to have really disappointed people hoping for another Mad Max movie. I thought it was a much more realistic depiction of what life would be after the fall or law and order. The Rover is not an action movie. It’s very deliberately paced. There are little bursts of gun play here and there, but it struck me as more of a subtle art film than anything else. All the actors were excellent, but between this and The Lighthouse I have gained a ton of respect for Robert Pattinson’s range. Not everyone will like this movie. I loved it.

Available on Blu-ray from Lion’s Gate.
