Out of the Past (1947)

Streaming on HBO Max | imdb | no original trailer available

Jeff runs a small town gas station and has led a quiet existence for three years. Then his old life as a private detective catches up to him and one of my favorite film noir stories begins to unfold. This is a real gem of ‘40s cinema. You have the always excellent Robert Mitchum in the lead role, and Jacques Tourneur in the director’s chair. Tourneur also made one of my top ‘50s horror films Curse of the Demon, as well as the recommended Nightfall, The Leopard Man and a 1964 episode of The Twilight Zone, Night Call, among many other highly regarded movies. In my book this might just be the single film noir that stands above them all. If you were going to watch one movie in this style, Out of the Past would be an excellent choice.

Available on Blu-ray from Warner Archives.

The Alabama Solution (2025)

Streaming on HBO Max | imdb | trailer

This is an excellent documentary on how inmates from multiple prisons in Alabama united to fight against abusive conditions. It is definitely a rough watch because of footage of horrific abuse and institutional conditions alone. On top of that, seeing the way that Alabama’s government has gamed their prison system is absolutely infuriating. Need I say this is not a movie for everyone? If you are not afraid to learn about some dark truths for the sake of greater knowledge, I highly recommend this doc. I also highly recommend you stay the hell away from Alabama if possible.

Companion (2025)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer (maybe skip this as it is loaded with spoilers)

I was pretty much blown away by this film right out of the gate. I don’t want to say too much about the plot in order not to spoil any surprises. It would be best experienced cold. The movie is essentially a sci-fi thriller, but you get a few doses of very graphic violence, and some well crafted dark humor too. Lead actress Sophie Thatcher is flat-out excellent (and I hear she is a Throbbing Gristle fan too). A few aspects of Companion reminded me of the Westworld original film and HBO series, as well as Ex Machina, BUT I still give it a 10/10. Do not miss this one.

Available on 4k UHD from Warner Home Video.

My Mom Jayne (2025)

Streaming on Max | imdb | trailer

Mariska Hargitay does a deep exploration of the life of her mother Jayne Mansfield. What could have easily been a straightforward fluffy biographical documentary is anything but. Hargitay holds nothing back. Many uncomfortable facts are revealed over the runtime. I’d say if you have even a passing interest in the tragic life of Mansfield, you need to watch. This is heavy stuff, and handled very well by the director.

A Choice of Weapons: Inspired by Gordon Parks (2021)

Streaming on Max | imdb | trailer

Gordon Parks is probably best known for directing Shaft, which really kicked off the Black Action craze of the ‘70s. While that is no small achievement, he was already a hugely successful photojournalist when he started making films. This documentary is a good overview of his career and also shows his influence on artists during, and after, his lifetime. Parks’ work is mind blowing on multiple levels, so don’t pass on this movie. I give it a 10/10, and my most enthusiastic recommendation.

BONUS: You can watch a short video about the excellent book “Gordon Parks: The Atmosphere of Crime, 1957” here. This publication is sadly out of print (and expensive to buy), but I highly recommend you check to see if your local library carries it. That, or any publication on Parks’ photography, is well worth seeking out. You can also see many of his photos online at the Gordon Parks Foundation website.

Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes (2022)

Streaming on Max | imdb | trailer

The Chernobyl mini-series got a ton of well-deserved attention. However I have a feeling that only a small fraction of viewers also watched this fantastic documentary. It is just as sad and grim as you can imagine, but I think this is essential viewing for anyone not afraid to look at the dark side of history. I am astonished this was even made, as the sheer amount of source film and video footage must have been daunting. Director James Jones and crew did an amazing job assembling a tasteful and coherent documentary that succeeds in making the story of the Chernobyl disaster comprehensible.

BONUS: You can watch an interview with the director discussing the making of the film here.

Baghdad ER (2006)

Streaming on Max | imdb | no trailer available

This is a short but excellent documentary filmed during The Iraq War. It is extremely graphic right from the start, so if you are squeamish you will want to stay far away. The filmmakers managed to make a very honest and objective film, that avoids bullshit politics, and just tells the story of a frontline hospital and the people in it. There are moments that are legitimately poetic here too. I give Baghdad ER a 10/10.

Donyale Luna: Supermodel (2023)

Streaming on Max | imdb | trailer

Here is a really good documentary on the life and career of a model that I was totally unfamiliar with before. Luna had a groundbreaking career in late ‘60s Europe but was passed over for big opportunities in the USA because she was black. Her lack of a larger success was part of what led to her tragic end. This is a movie that I chose specifically because it is off the beaten path and shines a light on a human story that is worth knowing about. At this time there are very few user or critic reviews on IMDb, which I find terribly sad. Challenge yourself to watch this film and learn a little something, instead of turning your brain off with simple entertainment. Anomalous Cinema is often not easy cinema. Donyale Luna is a person worth knowing about, and this is a very well made movie that is absolutely worth your time.

When Trumpets Fade (1998)

Streaming on Max | imdb | trailer

Here’s a surprisingly good WWII movie made for HBO in response to Saving Private Ryan. A low-ranking burnout is ashamed of his conduct in action but gets promoted anyway and goes on to lead a dangerous mission. You will probably recognize many actors in this movie. It’s more fun if I don’t list them. When Trumpets Fade is not action packed, but it’s a proper length, never dull, and dark as hell.

A Revolution on Canvas (2023)

Streaming on Max | imdb | trailer

Sorry I got my wires crossed and have done two Max posts in a row. I will do my best to avoid that in the future.

The Iranian visual artist Nickzad Nodjoumi exhibited 100+ artworks at the beginning of Ayatollah Kohmeni’s reign in 1981. He had to flee the country due to controversy the exhibition stirred up, and his work has been held by the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art ever since. This documentary was made by his daughter and deals with Nickzad’s life, career, family, as well as his attempt to reclaim his work. I was unfamiliar with the artist before seeing the film and I am now a fan. His art is often dark, brave, and scathingly critical, but always beautiful. The story of his family is engrossing as well. I tip my hat to Max for releasing this film. I learned things, and so will you.
