High Rise (2015)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

Social norms melt down to the darkest depths in a self-contained mega apartment complex. J.G. Ballard is my favorite author, and this is an excellent adaptation of one of his more extreme novels. I’m not one to re-watch more recent movies but I’ve seen High Rise at least three times. It’s almost perfect and checks all the boxes. Watch this immediately, and then check out all the other work by director Ben Wheatley.

Available on Blu-ray from Magnet.

Turkey Shoot (1982)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

Aka Escape 2000 this is a futuristic prison film where baddies hunt humans. This is a personal all-time favorite exploitation movie. It’s got everything: action, drama, sleaze and a belligerent mutant wolf man. Turkey Shoot may be the most bizarre of all the ’80s Australian exploitation films and is a blast from start to finish.

Available on Blu-ray from Severin.

Struggle: The Life and Lost Art of Szukalski (2018)

Streaming on Netflix | imdb | trailer

I saw an exhibition of Szukalski’s work at The Visionary Art Museum many years ago and became an instant fan. This documentary was a treat as I knew very little about the man. Yes, he worked for the Nazis, but I feel he redeemed himself. Even if you disagree with me, I feel this is an excellent movie worth watching. I give Struggle my highest recommendation.

Not available on Blu-ray.

The Brain That Wouldn’t Die (1962)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

A doctor’s wife is decapitated in an accident but he manages to keep her head alive while he hunts for a new body. This is might just be my favorite “so bad it’s good” movie. I’m pretty sure the ’80s classic Re-Animator was heavily influenced by The Brain That Wouldn’t Die. I’d recommend watching this with a few drinks, or whathaveyou, to loosen up. Maybe invite some friends. It’s quite a ride. The film is public domain so there are tons of shitty versions out there. Look for a version that is widescreen and 1080p.

Available on Blu-ray from Scream Factory.

Tom of Finland (2017)

Fantastic bio-pic about erotic artist Touko Valio Laaksonen. If you’re not a homophobe, you need to see this. If you are a homophobe, you don’t belong here.

The Seventh Curse (1986)

I couldn’t find a decent image from the film, so here’s a fancy Chow Yun Fat promo photo I tweaked.

Chow Yun Fat plays a hero cop who takes on a black magic tribe in the jungle. This film is a BAT SHIT CRAZY mash-up of gory horror and action. Need I say more?

9 (2009)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

Rag dolls vs. death machines after the fall of man. I don’t normally enjoy movies made with young people in mind, but this was damn good. It’s is a very imaginative creation from start to finish. Well, there is one moment of Disney-esque happy fluff but it’s over fast. 9 also features excellent sound design. Try to watch this when connected to a good stereo with a subwoofer or the best headphones you can get your hands on. There are lots of lovingly crafted weird sounds to enjoy.

Available on Blu-ray from Universal.

The Stranger (1946)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

I am a big fan of Film Noir and this is an excellent example. Orson Welles has something to hide and Edward G. Robinson is on to him. Sounds too simple but damn this is a great film. The Stranger is not to be missed Anomalous Cinema!

Available on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber.

Force Majeure (2014)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

An avalanche causes family issues. This movie is beautifully filmed, original, sometimes funny, and pretty damned thought provoking. Be warned, it is long and very deliberately paced. It also made me want to crawl out of my skin with embarrassment and sympathy for the characters. Recommended if you are patient and open minded.

Available on Blu-ray from Magnolia Pictures.
