Hobo with a Shotgun (2011)

The headline read “Hobo Stops Begging, Demands Change.” That, and the fact that all exploitation elements are cranked to 11, sums up this movie. I’ve been a Rutger Hauer fan since seeing Blade Runner is a kid. I think I’ve seen the majority of his films, and I have even read his autobiography. For many years I complained about the injustice of Hauer not getting a good lead role. Well in 2011 the stars aligned – Hobo with a Shotgun was announced. I was avidly following the pre-release promotion of the movie, and was not disappointed when I finally got to see the finished product. I think the low rating on imdb is because of the overall purposeful cheese factor, and the fact everything offensive is thrown in to the mix. Yeah it ain’t Ingmar Bergman, but I give it a perfect score. RIP Mr. Hauer.

Two friends are fed up with the world, enter into a suicide pact, and whacky hijinks ensue. Jerrod Carmichael directs and stars in this entertaining buddy / black comedy. His co-star is the excellent Christopher Abbot (Possessor, Catch-22). This movie is fast paced and as dark as can be, while remaining legitimately funny throughout. You have to be a bit of a creepy weirdo to appreciate On the Count of Three, but that’s what makes it Anomalous.

Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

Back when this one came out in theaters I was thirteen years old. During the summer my mother would give me $1.50 to go see a movie at the second-run theater at the mall (and to get me out of her hair). I sat through MANY crappy PG and PG-13 films, but this one made me very happy. It’s got martial arts action, monsters, comedy, crazy special effects, lovely ladies, and Kurt Russell hamming up a storm. I revisit it every few years and yep, it’s cheezy as hell, but still a lot of fun. If you haven’t experienced this oddball John Carpenter creation, maybe check it out with the help of your favorite psychoactive substance. Hell, depending on the age of your kids, Big Trouble… just might be fun for the whole family.

Ghost World (2001)

An irreverent girl graduates high school, and needs to figure out what’s next, all while navigating many weird characters in Anytown, USA. Well, not Anytown. It seems like a Middle America mashup of Austin, Portland, OR and a more typical, boring small city. Directed by Terry Zwigoff (Crumb, Art School Confidential, etc.) and based on the graphic novel by Daniel Clowes, this is a wonderfully unique comedy / drama. It manages to feature some hilariously surreal moments that will remind you very much of situations that have happened to you, or stories you’ve heard friends tell. “Man, the STRANGEST thing just happened…” If you have a counter cultural bone in your body, this is essential viewing. My partner and I still reference this regularly. We even named our cat after the lead character Enid. I rate Ghost World among my favorite films, and will never get sick of watching it. Younger viewers please be prepared for some “triggering” situations and dialog, or just skip it.

This is an excellent Swedish revenge film that was remade as Cold Pursuit with Liam Neeson as the lead. The original stars Stellan Skarsgård, and is just as superior as you would imagine. It’s violent, packed with black humor, and made with a style that borders on art film. Need I say more?

Hot Fuzz (2007)

This is a spoof of action films, that is also better than most action films. I liked Shaun of the Dead, but enjoyed this (and The World’s End) much more. Those three films make up the Edgar Wright / Simon Pegg “Cornetto Trilogy”, and I think Hot Fuzz is my personal favorite. What is not to love about a relentless pace with legitimately funny lines sprinkled throughout. As usual with these guys, there are lots of subtle references throughout the film. The best is the desk sergeant reading a copy of Iain Banks’ excellent novel “Complicity.” Edgar Wright’s recent Last Night in Soho wasn’t bad, but I like his action work best. I’m very much looking forward to his upcoming version of The Running Man. Oh and if you somehow missed the Wright / Pegg / Frost series Spaced, get on it. That remains one of the very best English comedy series ever made.

Black Dynamite (2009)

Here we have the second-best Black Action Hero parody next to I’m Gonna Git You Sucka (and it’s an extremely close second). This was my favorite comedy to come out in 2009, and just as funny on a recent second viewing. Star Michael Jai White is best known for action films, but really shows his comedy and acting talent here (he even co-wrote the screenplay). I just wish he’d get offered better roles. Black Dynamite was spun off into an animated series that I personally couldn’t get into, but give it a try if you like the film.

Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil (2010)

As I have probably mentioned in the past, I am very picky about horror comedies. Street Trash, Hobo with a Shotgun, and Bad Taste are among the few I genuinely like. Tucker and Dale… is another rare example of laugh out loud humor and gore working well in a movie. I rewatched this recently, and its held up quite well. “This vacation sucks,” but this film is a lot of fun.

Riders of Justice (2020)

This is a surprisingly good, big-budget, action comedy from Denmark. I actually laughed out loud a few times, AND things got pretty gory on occasion. The violence is more extreme than I would have expected from a Scandinavian blockbuster. I love Mads Mikkelsen, but he’s not always in good films. Luckily this turned out to be a perfect choice for him, and a very entertaining movie too.

Slither (2006)

Years before James Gunn made movies about superheroes, he made this high quality horror / comedy. Mr. Gunn got his start at Troma, so there’s plenty of slapstick gore, and other naughty weirdness happening. Back when this came out, it was a real pleasure to see Michael Rooker get a more prominent role than he had in ages. He’s great in this movie too. If you’ve never seen Slither, I recommend you ingest your favorite psychoactive and strap yourself in for a crazy ride.
