That Obscure Object of Desire (1977)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

Buñuel’s final directorial effort is a beautiful, infuriating, and confusing movie. The film is far more Art than entertainment, but it still manages to be funny at times too. It’s also one of my favorites among this director’s work.

Available on Blu-ray from Lion’s Gate.

Bachelor Party (1984)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

I was way too young when I first saw this raunchy comedy. I probably wasn’t even a teenager yet, but I loved Bachelor Party instantly. In spite of its silliness and age, I’ve enjoyed watching this one every few years since way back when. Its got some brutally cheesy moments like Adrian Zmed’s singing, but you’ll probably find even the unintended humor pretty damned amusing. Be prepared for a few jaw dropping moments. What a mainstream comedy could get away with in 1984 will be pretty shocking to a young contemporary audience. It’s really ok. Turn your brain off, consume some psychoactives, and enjoy.

Damn I wish they would have made a spinoff movie all about Brad.

Available on Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox.

A Boy and his Dog (1975)

Streaming FREE on YouTube | imdb | trailer

This is one of my favorite cult movies of all time. It’s a one-of-a-kind film based on a short story by Harlan Ellison (who mostly approved of the adaptation). Don Johnson is trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic wasteland with his dog Blood. He has a telepathic connection with the hyper-smart and talented pup. How do they use this amazing power? For the dog to find his boy some sex partners, of course. Beyond that it’s a trippy, funny, and fast paced adventure that should blow your mind all over your face.

Available on Blu-ray from Shout Factory.

Becoming Bond (2017)

Streaming on Hulu | imdb | trailer

This is a very entertaining Hulu original documentary on George Lazenby. It’s a funny look at his becoming James Bond for one film in spite of having zero acting experience. This is NOT a PG rated Bond film, so watch it without the kids around.

FYI – In case you think Lazenby is a one-hit wonder, check out the excellent giallo Who Saw Her Die? It’s available on Blu-ray from Arrow or streaming rental from YouTube or Apple TV.

Not available on Blu-ray.

Free Fire (2016)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

Here’s a very amusing action / comedy by Ben Wheatley (High Rise). Like I said before, you should really see all his films. The tag line tells you what you need to know… “All guns. No control.” Yes please.

Available on Blu-ray from Lion’s Gate.

Cast a Deadly Spell (1991)

Streaming on Max | imdb | trailer

Cast a Deadly Spell is a weird one. I will freely admit it is not for everyone. I love H. P. Lovecraft as well as film noir, and this film combines those two things. If that has you wrinkling your nose right now then give this a pass. It’s dated, low budget, and cheesy but I found this movie to be quite amusing (your poison of choice will definitely help). I always enjoy watching Fred Ward do his thing and you also get to see an early performance by Julianne Moore here. Don’t say I didn’t warn you if it doesn’t float your boat.

Force Majeure (2014)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

An avalanche causes family issues. This movie is beautifully filmed, original, sometimes funny, and pretty damned thought provoking. Be warned, it is long and very deliberately paced. It also made me want to crawl out of my skin with embarrassment and sympathy for the characters. Recommended if you are patient and open minded.

Available on Blu-ray from Magnolia Pictures.

I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore (2017)

Streaming on Netflix | imdb | trailer

This is an excellent dark comedy with plenty of action by Macon Blair aka the star of Blue Ruin. The bad guy is David Yow, visual artist and lead singer of Jesus Lizard. Elijah Wood is also in there wearing (what I heard are his own) awesome metal shirts. Filmed in my home base of Portland, Oregon, one of the locations is The Sandy Hut bar. That place is a personal favorite and highly recommended if you happen to visit.

Not available on Blu-ray.

Heathers (1988)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

This may be the last great ’80s movie. Heathers is a one-of-a-kind, highly stylized dark comedy starring Christian Slater and Winona Ryder. So dark that if you’ve been even remotely effected by any of the horrible violence around High Schools since 1999 you better skip this one. On the other hand if you’re a Stranger Things fan and haven’t seen this you’re doing yourself a major disservice. I love that the screenwriter wrote his own slang terms to parody and outdo what was coming out of the mouths of teenagers at the time. My favorite involves a chainsaw.

FYI – There was a TV series reboot of Heathers in 2018 but it didn’t work out, and sounds like it wasn’t very good anyway.

Available on Blu-ray from Image Entertainment.

The Lobster (2015)

JustWatch Streaming Info | imdb | trailer

I am a big fan of Yorgos Lanthimos. His best film is Dogtooth but this one is pretty great. The premise (get laid or be turned into an animal) sounds like a Saturday Night Live sketch making fun of art films but IT WORKS. Don’t miss this one.

The Lobster is available on Blu-ray from Lion’s Gate.
